Disguise

Scott isn't a big fan of shopping, but he has to have a new suit for his college interviews. He's already self-conscious enough about the fact that he won't be able to take his sunglasses off.

"Tell them you have an eye condition," Warren says, steering him through racks of suits that line the hushed and apparently very fashionable store. Scott would have been just as happy to go to the mall.

"I'm planning to," Scott says. "I hate having to start by apologizing."

"Just tell them, don't apologize." Scott takes a jacket off the rack and frowns at it. Warren takes it away from him and hands him one that looks essentially identical to Scott. "Try this."

Scott does, and considers himself in the dressing-room mirror. He's not quite sure where this person came from. "The pants are too long."

"That's why they have alterations."

"I just want to buy a suit," Scott says helplessly.

"It'll help make up for the apologizing," Warren says. He shrugs one shoulder, a gesture Scott knows is easier for him than a real shrug with his wings strapped down under his clothes. "At least yours will fit right."

Scott tugs the sleeve up to look at the price and quickly pushes it back down. Professor Xavier will pay the charge on his credit card without blinking, so he shouldn't blink himself, except for how he thinks some people pay less than that in rent. Still, Warren probably has a point.

"I thought you said not to apologize," he says.

"Yes, but you will anyway," Warren says.

Scott wants to say something stupid like I wish we were going to the same college or I'm really scared or what will I do when no one knows me? Instead he says, "What do you think?"

Warren looks him up and down. "That works," he says finally. "I'd never know you were a mutant menace." Scott looks at himself in the mirror and nods; it's a good disguise.
